Motherhood mantras

Did you know your thoughts become things? Your words become your reality.

So I want to ask you: how do you define your motherhood experience?
Wonderful?
A struggle...?
Empowering,
Joyful,
Pleasurable!
Exhausting...

Think about it, the way you are defining it - for others, verbally, or even for yourself, in your thoughts - is shaping the way you experience it.

This is how the world works, in energetic levels, this is universal law.

So next time you talk, write, or think about your motherhood path choose wisely... Choose to see - in your daily experiences like in your deep beliefs - what you wish it to become. If you wish write an affirmation for this, and believe me, it is a powerful exercise to repeat it every time what you are feeling is not what you wish to be experiencing.
An affirmation is like a mantra, made of powerful and uplifting words that can help you to higher your vibration, and you don't need to repeat complicated Sanskrit sounds if that does not resonate with you (but that is also available! And they have proved power and benefits), you can make your own medicine - write your mantra. And repeat it.
Repeat it. As many times as needed, inside your head or at loud; keeping it as a secret or sharing it with others.

My affirmation for the day:
"I am manifesting a motherhood experienced that is peaceful, joyful, loving and stimulating for both me and my child."

Self Massage - feet

I come from a place where feet are not considered important, for many even seen as "dirty" or "ugly"; most of the time hidden inside boots, or hurt by uncomfortable shoes... Where I come from walking barefoot is not respected in all the healing power it contains... And since I was a child I hear my mother saying "put on your shoes!!"
I traveled the world and came to live in a place where a full spa relaxing experience starts with carefully (ritualistically even) washing of the feet; where touching someone else's feet is a sign of respect; and Lovers massaging each other's feet a love making ritual...

In Thailand statues and images of Buddha's feet are worshiped, and in India feet are worthy of jewelry and beautification Henna rituals.

Chinese medicine is proof to the important acupressure and meridians your feet possess and it is a well know practice to use a "pebble walk" (you can find them in Hong Kong in almost every corner!) to activate these healing points. Did you know a foot massage can even induce labour? (and this is why during pregnancy massages should be only performed by a knowledgeable practitioner).
Ayurveda, the ancient Indian medicine, dedicates countless rituals to this practice of foot massage, with benefits that go from stress relief to deep emotional healing, and even full activation of your chakra system!

What am I here to share? You have your healing power in your hands (rather, in your feet!) just choose to access this medicine and every night, just before bed: massage your own feet.

Only this, do it intuitively, listening to your body, it's needs and guidance.
This is my #SelfLoveTip from last #motherAndLittleOneYoga session and here to share it with you - loving foot massage.

"Diseases do not go near one who massages his feet before sleep, just as snakes do not approach eagles.”

Nature III

Mountain pose teaches us, literally, how to stand on our own two feet... teaching us to root ourselves into the earth... Our bodies become a connection between heaven and earth.
~ Carol Krucoff

Mountain pose (Tadasana)

Tree pose (Vrksasana)

Lotus pose (Padmasana)
...
These are only a few examples where Yoga wisdom is telling you:
Go.to.nature.

Whenever possible go and practice outside... and feel how much power the surroundings can bring to your practice. Let the sounds guide you, the breezes caress you, the animals inspire you...

Safe place

And if it happens to you that your child "is fine" with someone else, and as soon as you come near jumps on your lap crying and complaining about everything... If it feels like with you "she doesn't listen", "he doesn't behave"... remember... you are your children's safe place, the comfort zone, the sacred being in their lives with whom they can really be themselves, let all emotions flow, totally relax into coddles and sleep or cry over frustrations and fears.

We all need a place like this in our lives... And isn't it an honor to be chosen to give this kind of nourishment and... Love to someone? Isn't it incredible how mother's lap always seams to make things better?
For me this is one of the many faces of the unconditional Love we all talk about: to be able to offer a hug during a tantrum holding no judgments about what is going on inside of their little bodies.

We all need a place like this in our lives... Where we can relax into Being. Nothing else.

For this, babies need their mothers... And mothers need... Yoga?

Bring Yoga to your daily life, mamma with #ommmmmmamma

This is MY motherhood yoga

My best yoga moments?
Being at peace during a tantrum.

I practice yoga for more than ten years and only now I come to know the true nature of this path... The hardest asanas, the more uplifting mantras...

The yogi toes:
To be in perfect balance in a slippery floor; coming out of the shower holding my baby; reaching for the coffee pot while nursing; or jumping on the bus with the baby in the sling - oh this is what the yogi toes are for!

Core muscles:
Getting up and sitting down with no hands (because you are carefully holding a sleeping a baby).

Arm strength:
Picking baby up, putting baby down. Repeating (many times repeating).

Calf muscles strength and flexibility:
For comfortable Malasana, squatting in the playground, to play;
squatting at home, to pick up books, to put away socks, to collect pieces of food...

Balance asanas:
Motherhood, just like yoga, is all about balance.
Not only how to keep in balance, I learned, but also how not to get attach to it. Because, think about it, embracing your chaos, honoring your "motherhood messiness", is also a form of balance, no?

Yes, finding balance, inside and out.

The best "yoga world" help on the motherhood path?
I can tell you that the Ommmm mantra sound is soothing for a baby;
the exercise ball is great for rocking kids to sleep;
yoga mats make good car tracks (great grip);
mala necklaces are good to play with (and can even help with teething);
and the yoga studios...
Well, are not an option for me anymore... Now I am into babywearing yoga, stroller yoga, playground break yoga...

I can share with you that Vajrasana is good for kneeling on the floor with your little one after a meal (will help to digest your food);
and that the Virabhadrasana (the warrior) can be done with a baby on your breast.
Viparita Karani (legs up against the wall) will be copied by your child and is rejuvenating for both of you (even if you need it more than he does);
The dancer can be used for making chai;
And the tree pose practiced while doing the dishes...

 Motherhood for me is yoga in my daily life, and I found it to be nothing but a spiritual path. I even believe that in a way or another every mama is a #yogimama
Maybe it is not the spiritual path that takes me to follow a guru somewhere in a temple in Asia, but it's the one that allows me serenity in the middle of a busy market, so many times balancing baby and groceries on my shoulder;
helps me to find kindness in the aggressive crowd on a bus, often having to ask for a seat;
slows me down with calmness during toddler's playtime, and all the meltdowns it can involve;
inspires me with beautiful songs in a baby sleepless night;
grounds me in a city made of nothing but cement and skyscrapers...

This is my daily yoga, and my son is my master;
my routines my asanas, my parenting words my mantras.

Yes, I lay down my mat as often as I can and occasionally my son joins me (mainly climbing on my back, mostly using my hair tied up in a bun as a horn, but yes, joining me) but yoga is, more than ever, my daily life.

With it's sweetness and it's challenges. With it's sticky sweat and it's bliss.
Because no, I don't love it all. Just like in yoga class I want to skip the hardest sequences sometimes;
I feel stiff and blame the tiredness for my aches and pains, often...
And some days I just can't manage anything deeper than a shallow breath, forgetting all pranayama techniques...

But I do, wear yoga pants more often than ever ;-)
And I do... Fell motherhood is here to help me evolve and awaken.

I do practice THIS yoga everyday but I also make it a priority to spend some time, everyday, alone with my mat, nourishing myself.
During my son's nap I do not clean, cook, or work, I lay down my mat and practice MY yoga. I nourish myself while he rests, and sometimes this can mean having a cup of coffee and stare out the window, enjoying the rare moment of silence; it can be talking to a friend on fb; it is often reading something inspiring; appreciate beauty... Or it can be one hour of uninterrupted Ashtanga, it can mean... Taking a nap with him.

Choose your nourishment, mother yourself first, bring yoga to your daily life #yogimama

Healing - Postpartum

After I gave birth my husband rushed to cover my head with a cloth; I was gifted a little bag of different spices from India, to add to my water, to my food, to my bath.
After I gave birth my mother in law asked me everyday "are you getting daily body oil massages?". I wasn't, and she was concerned: "how are you going to recover?!"

After I gave birth... I was surprised, puzzled, confused, and a little bit giggly, I confess, with all of this "special treatment"! Why and what was the meaning of all this?

I got curious, I started to investigate: Postpartum traditions from non-western cultures.
I say non-western cause I am from Europe and to questions like "what special practices do you follow in your country after birth?" I had to answer... "None". And that just didn't sound right...

The time after birth revealed itself to be the most delicate, vulnerable, raw, fascinating, emotional, happiest, overwhelming, exhausting, scary, loving, chaotic, empowering, confusing, passionate... Adventurous, creative... time of my life!
I will not say I am still recovering from it cause I am still LIVING it, since my son was born and I was re-born, more than two years a go.

So many different traditions around the world that honor this moment but most focus on two things:

Warmth
and Rest.

We can read about it from Red Tent's ancient practices, Ayurvedic science or Chinese Medicine principles; from African tribes practices to Native American traditions, Latin America and islands... All traditional cultures give so much to new mothers and their babies.
I simply love this honoring of the postpartum time .

The idea is to create an environment like the one in the WOMB, for mother and baby. Seclusion with rest and warmth. Keeping mother and baby safe and away from the world's noises and disturbances. Sounds good to me!

Rest.
This is considered vital in most cultures, to protect the delicate nervous systems of mother and baby:
In Japan, a new mother is in bed for 30 days;
Thailand rest and confinement up to 40 days after birth;
Haitian Culture: first three days;
Chinese Culture has an expression that literally means “doing the month”;
In Indonesian and Malaysian Cultures women do not cook or clean for the first 40 days;
Korean Culture: rest even up to 100 days;
Indian culture: 40 days;
Latin America respects "la cuarentena", 40 days of REST. Like in North Africa and the Middle East.

Malasian mothers wrap their tummy tightly with a cloth called bengkung wrap.

For the Maasai, in Africa, long seclusion for mother and child.
For some Indian tribes like the Shoshone, the new mother lives alone with her baby for the first month (to deepen the bond between the two).

Warmth.
Losing blood is considered a "cold" state for most traditional cultures of Asia, Latin America and Africa and several practices are created to help bring warmth to postpartum time.

In Southeast Asia there is a practice of "mother-warming" done by burning wood (collected by the father-to-be during pregnancy) near the place the new mother rests.
In Haitian Culture women take hot baths, drink warm teas and keep their head covered. Like in India where they also get daily body massages with warming oils and use heating spices in their food.
In China, Korea and Thailand new mothers avoid eating cold or raw food, lay by a fire, take hot baths, drink hot drinks; no washing the hair is advised, and no showers.

For the Maasai, after the seclusion time for mother and child a ceremony takes place two male sheep are chosen and only women eat them as a sign of respect for the pain woman feel during childbirth.
Another Shoshone tradition advises new parents to refrain from eating red meat for several weeks after the birth of the baby...
Latina moms are not advised to take heavy or spicy foods, but Indian women are given specific spices to "keep the body warm".
For the same reason no cold water, turnips, or bamboo shoots for East Asian moms.

And there is so much MAGIC in these #sacredrituals , honoring not only your physical body, but your spirit, nourishing your soul.
After I gave birth I got a little charm to keep next to the baby at all times, and a coin to offer to the Gods at the nearest temple...

In Indonesia and Malaysia it is believed mother and child are susceptible to evil spirits.
The Maasai ceremony after seclusion period is also a way to thank Engai (God) for being able to bear children.
In some cultures the new mom's feet can't touch the ground. And in India, in North Africa and the Middle East, applying henna to the mother's skin, specially the feet, is part of the postpartum care, keeping away the evil eye, it is believed, helping her feeling beautiful again and keeping her from getting up in her feet to do any of the household activities. Henna takes time to be applied, several hours to dry, and several days spent away from water.

What a beautiful way to see the passing of the time, and the recovery of your body through the healing designs being created, drying, fading away... In Nepal henna is also used, together with dark kohl (a traditional black makeup made of antimony) and swak, (a traditional dark lip stain made of walnut root), decorating the women as beautiful as a bride at her postpartum time (this is actually used as early as when they go into labour, cause this is considered the beginning of this Sacred period in their lives), and protecting her from malicious spirits.
In North African traditions mothers of twins are considered holy and their hands are kissed for blessings.
In Marroco the women will be protected from evil with henna, incense and amulets. In Andjra, the child is also hennaed on the
head, neck, navel, feet and fingernails, for protection.

So... How was YOUR postpartum experience? Where you given time to REST? Did you feel WARM?
What #postpartumTraditions did you follow, what #sacredrituals ?

Acceptance

Without resistance there is no suffering.

Today take all your child's needs as INVITATIONS.
Trust your baby, he is nothing but a MIRROR of how you are inside...
Take his demanding for attention as... an invitation. Truly accept that your child has a plan, a plan he made for the two of you, with LOVE.
Accept his appetite or his tiredness, his singing or his whining all as... an activity he invites you to.
Do not resist, just for today...

I wrote before how your are your child's HEALER right? Today it's time to accept he might also be here to heal you... Listen to all his unspoken words, for it is all, truly, SACRED.

Your child's healer

Healing

More than a parent, have you thought of yourself as your child's healer?

Your hands have reiki when you touch your son;
Your words are mantras when you speak to your daughter (and remember that your words will stay inside, like an inner voice... Choose wisely);
Your cooking is their medicine;
Your milk, your kisses, your cuddling is his meditation, his safe place...

Since my son was born I feel that I am here, and he choose me, to heal. To heal him, and to heal myself.
Since the first nights he was waking up with colic, or days unsettled by the loud noises, the bright lights, the crowds.. I felt I am here to soothe him, to help him trough this transition... To gently guide him.

Do you manage, in the middle of a teething crises night, to give a heartfelt kiss in your child's head? You are a healer.
Do you often, during a drama filled bath time, throw a few drops of lavender EO (to induce relaxation) or a pinch of salt (to neutralize energy) into the water? You are a healer.
Do you think of squeezing breast milk or rub coconut oil on everything, before you consider it a medical issue? Your a healer.
Do you trust gems and stones healing powers and choose amber for your baby's neck? Your a healer.
Do you intuitively massage your baby's feet when he is stressed out or rub his back when he is tired, or gently tap his head when he needs sleep...? You are a healer.
Do you...
Yes, tell me what you do, what are your HEALER talents?

Affirmation for the day:
"I have inside of me all it takes to heal my child".

Tree meditation

Trees are powerful healers and can help you to balance your chakras, ground yourself and give you a general sense of wellbeing (and all the oxygen we breathe! Do we forget this?).

It is very powerful to meditate by a tree and just spending time in nature is, by itself, healing.

Try this simple and powerful #meditationForMothers when your baby is fussy, agitated or can't settle to sleep:

Grab your baby carrier and with your baby close to your heart go to the trees;
Start by asking for help, talk to Mother Nature,
She (as all mothers) knows just what you need;

Take your shoes of, if you can, and walk near the trees, feel the energy that comes from these beautiful beings;

When you feel called to one of them come closer, feet flat on the ground, and with open palms, close your eyes and ask for permission to come closer;
If you focus deep inside of you, you will receive an answer (tingling in your hands for instance can mean the tree does not wish you to come closer, and a feeling of being pulled might mean "come");
Repeat this exercise till you find a tree that feels "right". This is the tree for you, follow your instinct;

Come close and hug this tree. With all your love, just hold a hug for some moments;
Let your breathe get deeper and deeper and feel your connection to Earth;
Feel your negative energy going down to your feet into the soil, meeting the tree roots and coming up the tree bark, being transmuted into positive energy; feel it coming from the tree, to you, pouring from the tree branches and leaves to your crown chakra, sinking inside, filling all your being with light;

Do this, feeling this cycle of energy share with the tree till you feel all your physical and energetic body light, and your baby is calm (maybe smiling).

Thank your tree for this gift and know this is healing for her also. Be very mindful not to practice this with a fruit tree, for it will damage it.

Share this meditation to your children, doesn't matter how young or old they are, just caressing a tree is healing for us all.

If you find a tree that really resonates with you, you can do this often and develop a strong relationship, connecting and reaching out for healing even when you are physically far from her.

Feel all the magic of this and feed your children's world with it's beauty.

Balance II

Since I've become a mother I am afraid of chaos.
Yes, I am literally afraid of what chaos does to my days, how unsettling it is for my heart, how stressful for my nights and how much anxiety it brings to nap times. Unpredictable - is now a scary word.
Since I've become a mother I am a balance junkie. I want balance. All my day, and all my nights I am a balance seeker, and the exercise does not stop, I can't stop thinking of ways to balance up my "now" with my "later".
I used to be free, I feel, flowing in my messy days, not afraid of a hungover, a small accident, a surprise, an unexpected trip... Could spend a whole month improvising... Happily.

And that is not me anymore. I have changed.

I am grieving the loss of the woman who could take wine any hour of her day and would, literally, often (!), forget where she was, just because she had so much fun getting there.
Now I seek for balance, not only my own, but the needed balance a little being I call #tumtum (my son) depends on me to achieve.
I am grieving the loss of that woman who used to say "I will sleep when I am really old" just before she went out for a party... With no plan to come back before sunrise.
I have changed. Now I dream of naps... And most times join my baby in his sleep, doesn't matter if it's night or day.
I used to live in a kind of "chaos" that held the taste of a blissful rest.
I am grieving that, I admit.
I am living now a "calm" life... The kind of calmness a prisoner wants to run from.
Some days I am that prisoner. And sharing this sets me free.
Grateful for you, holding space for me. My balance is here.

Say something nice

#ommmmmmamma writing for #sacredBeginnings

I don't know about you but I feel the energy really strong around me right now... Not all positive.... A lot of fears, anxieties and self doubt is coming to visit at this time...
The planets, the Sun, the Moon and the stars are to blame, the sky readers tell me... as there are rare, special alignments taking place.
And I am here just to remind us:
A challenge is - always - a blessing.
So I have decided to lift up my vibration simply by changing my focus.
What do you do when you feel like this? Did you know that just choosing vibrant colors, appreciating beauty, listening to your favorite music or just... a hug... Can instantly uplift you?

Join me, lets connect just by saying... something nice...

If you wish tag a friend you know is struggling at this time... <3

Openness

Today don't worry about the "right yoga practice", specially if you do it with your children do not allow frustration to visit you at this time that you wish to be peaceful, relaxing, zen...

How to do it? Do not plan too much, just start where you are, with what you have and keep... Opening.

Be open to be playful, to create new asanas, to flow in your unique "partner yoga" variations from one sequence to the other... And if you try it with a smile, and with a kind word, and always with mindful touch and connection between you and your little one, I can assure you, doesn't matter how many times you fall out of a perfect pose because they jump on you, or extended another one longer because it's just the perfect "bridge" for the car race that in the meanwhile started... You are doing "good yoga".

Meditative mind

#ommmmmmamma writing for #sacredbeginnings

Today live your day with a meditative mind. Not something you need to look for, force, or struggle to achieve, but only an... Openness. Be open to welcome meditation into your routines. And not even in any specific way, like a practice that you have to find space for, or a proper way to sit for it, or any special sound to listen to but merely... A state of mind.

Go thought your day reminding yourself maybe while you cook "this could be mediation", or while you nurse your baby "what can I focus on right now that can help to rise my vibration?"... Just as a reminder, welcome meditation into your life. It is not a complicate practice, it is an openness... To go back to Source, and nourish your life with it's sacredness.

Chaos is the new Zen

#ommmmmmamma writing for #sacredBeginnings <3

What if... You were not here to fix anything... Not your broken heart or your messy room... Not your child's temper or your fizzy hair...
What if... You were here, chosen to be specifically here, at this time, to embrace the... Chaos of your life?
What if this IS how your life is supposed to be?
I believe so... Chaos is, the new Zen.

Flexibility

Today keep an OPEN mind.
Yoga is a form of stretching, but not only of the body...
Stretch your mind a little bit today...
How?

Be more tolerant, more understanding, more creative, more adventurous...

Rest in the awareness that everything changes, the world around you is never stable, it keeps moving, just like your thoughts, your toddler's moods, your baby's development stages... Accept the CHANGE.

And next time you feel stiffness, in your joints or in your neck... Use this kind of #meditationForMothers going WITHIN, and inquiring how stiff is your mind? How stuck are your thoughts maybe in some... outdated beliefs? Be open to breathe into that, giving it space to open... and HEAL.
And remember there is no ailment that comes only from the body, you are whole, yoga helps to balance both the inside and the outside worlds you have in you. Bringing lightness to your Being with #ommmmmmamma

Balance

Light and darkness
Action and stillness
Yin and Yang
Giving and... Receiving

Today (I would say this whole week!) focus on receiving...
Did you know an OPEN heart that always gives, without taking anything in EXCHANGE (it can be in any form, but some kind of energy in exchange) can be a form of unbalance in your life?
Today go WITHIN with this thought, take some time to feel what areas of your life are you using energy, and which ones feel like they are draining your energy... Feeling drained? Yes, this is a sign of unbalance.

Mothers are GENEROUS givers but did you know being open to receive is also a form of generosity, specially towards YOURSELF?
Today look for balance. And consider this a #meditationForMothers. There, you have done your practice.
